Glass Dildos – Are They The Future?

Whenever I write a guide to sex toys, I always recommend that beginners avoid using glass toys. One reason being that glass toys can be un-safe (if you buy a cheap toy, that is). Secondly, glass sex toys seem to scare the uninitiated more than any other material (except maybe wood), and you need to be as relaxed as possible when first experimenting with dildos, butt plugs, vibrators and so forth.

Nevertheless, glass toys are fun, non-porous, and compatible with every type of lube. What more could you possible want? This article will explore the wonderful world of glass toys, and what you should look out for when shopping for one of your own.

Why choose glass?

Why not?

On a practical level; they are compatible with any type of lube, and you won’t need to use as much on clear glass as you would with other materials. Glass is also easy to clean and can be sterilized using hot water – I know people who clean their glass toys in their dishwasher! Always check with the manufacturer, though, before subjecting your toy to boiling water.
On a health level; glass is a natural and reusable material which is the safest of all to use. It’s hygienic, non-porous and free of any chemical that could be harmful.

So, why isn’t everyone using them?

Good question!

The problem with glass is that people can’t help thinking about it breaking, and so there are numerous myths surrounding glass toys. The main one being that they’ll break during use and damage your insides. The truth is, glass sex toys are made out of sturdy and solid glass (medical-grade borosilicate is the strongest available) that are resistant to cracks and damage. Always check what you’re buying, and avoid any ‘cheap’ glass toys that are on the market. It’s likely these are mass produced and won’t have the quality checked as often as the pricier pieces.

Unless your toys is chipped, it won’t harm you. Use your common sense; before buying and using your glass sex toys you should always inspect them for damage. Although glass toys are impossible to damage with normal use, there’s always a chance that you’ll drop or knock it and incur damage. If you own more than one glass toy; avoid washing them together – and be weary of placing your dildo in a dishwasher full of items that could knock against it and cause damage.

The biggest danger when it comes to glass dildos is, in fact, temperature play. Glass is very sensitive to temperature and can be manipulated through running the toy under warm or cool water. However, some tend to take it a little too far. Don’t ever freeze your sex toy for a kinky bedroom session. Ever. Do you remember that tongue scene in ‘Dumb and Dumber’? Enough said. The same applies for boiling hot water.

Not all glass toys are great

As mentioned above, the quality of the toys depends on the manufacturer. Not all glass toys are created equal. As the saying goes; “you get what you pay for” – if you skimp and buy a cheaper toy, it’ll show. I’ve certainly been disappointed with the quality of glass dildos in the past.

One word of warning – when you buy a glass sex toy, you must be prepared to receive a toy that will not be a perfect replica of the photos and specs you saw on the website (or back of the box). The highest quality glass toys will be hand-blown, and so each toy is unique. Of course, too much of a variance leads to disappointment, and sometimes, a sex toy you have no desire to use. Read as many reviews as possible before purchasing your toy – this should give you an idea of what to expect.

As with any other sex toy, you should only purchase toys from sites and manufacturers that you trust. If you’re still nervous at the prospect of playing with glass, start with a glass wand or a straight glass dildo; such as Prisms Kundalini Thrusting Wand (€ 25.31) – available at Kinky.ie. These are used mainly for clitoral stimulation, so you can get used to the feeling of glass without having to be penetrated by it. When you feel a little more comfortable’ try sliding the wand around your vagina and work your way up to sliding the wand in and out – you won’t regret trying it!!
