A Guide to Anal Beads

Woman's bottom in g-string

Anal beads are a great way to experience anal sex gradually and gently. Anal penetration for the first time can be a worrying and uncomfortable experience, so experimenting with toys such as anal beads are a good way of easing your way into it. Anal beads are as the name suggests, an anal toy consisting of multiple spheres or balls attached together. The majority of anal beads start smaller and gradually get larger as you move down the chain, however some toys do have the same size.

With over a third of Westerners having tried it, anal penetration is a kink that is becoming increasingly popular in the bedroom. When used correctly provide sensations that can turn a standard orgasm into a spine tingling experience!

How do I choose the best beads?

Anal beads are easier to use than many of the other anal toys on the market. Anal beads are almost always smooth, spheres that are made of plastic, metal or silicone. Some are made from glass or wood; I recommend avoiding these are there’s a chance of the glass breaking or the wood splintering in the anus. Once inserted, they can be left in the rectum during intercourse, or can be removed with varying speeds to help achieve orgasm.

When choosing the right beads, there are a few things to keep in mind. Beginners will want to start off with a set of flexible beads, like the Loving Joy Anal Love Beads (€ 8.39 – kinky.ie). The flexibility will allow you to stimulate various parts inside you until you find your pleasure points. Before buying, make sure the beads are well made and that there’s no risk of the cord breaking inside you. The best and safest anal beads will have a strong, thick loop or wide handle, to ensure that they remain partly outside the body at all times. Although I recommend starting off with beads with a handle, if you opt for one without, make sure you leave at least three beads outside of your body at all times. This should prevent an unpleasant trip to A&E.

Hygiene is key

Sex can be messy, and even more-so when it comes to anal sex. In fact, according to a recent survey it’s the mess that puts most off from trying it. There are simply steps to take which will ensure that your experience is clean, safe and fun. Before any anal play; make sure you use the toilet at least 30 minutes in advance and wash the area around the anus thoroughly. Generally, faeces is not stored where a penis, tongue or sex toy can reach. However, for those wanting to be squeaky clean, using an enema or douche will help release any build up. These are affordable and easy to use –we recommend Anal Douche (€ 16.80- kinky.ie) and the Clean Stream Flex Tip Cleansing Enema Bulb (€ 28.01 – kinky.ie). This step is not needed, and is more of a personal preference than a hygiene essential.

As with all toys, wash your beads thoroughly and store them after use. If you and your partner decide to share toys during a kinky session; wash between uses. This reduces the risk of infections and other nasty surprises.

Lube, lube, lube!

Since the anus does not lubricate itself, lube will make the experience more comfortable and pleasurable. There are plenty of anal lubes available which have a greater viscosity than the standard water based versions – Anal Joy Lovin Lubricant (€ 14.01 – kinky.ie) is an affordable and long lasting anal lube. Some lubes, such as Doc Johnson Relax Anal Relaxer (€ 22.41 – kinky.ie), are made with a formula that delicately relaxes anal muscles. Coat the length of the balls and the area around your anus with the lube of your choice, and then you’re ready to go.

Time to play

Don’t feel the need to jump straight into it. Get yourself turned on and in the mood first, and warm the anus up by massaging and caressing the area. To start, push the first bead or two inside you and get used to the sensation of anal penetration. When you feel comfortable and ready, insert one at a time. Enjoy the experience, add more lube when you need do, go slow, and see what works best for you. Depending on the sensitivity, you may orgasm as you continue penetration. However, for added sensations, try pulling the beads out at the point of orgasm.

If you’re using beads on your partner, take it slowly and listen to her moans and groans. Stimulating other areas, such as her thighs and lower back will heighten her arousal and could provide a welcome break from the penetration. Once your partner is comfortable, try using the beads during vaginal penetration for a kinky twist. The feeling of increased pressure at the anus will intensify her arousal and will feel incredible.

Once you’ve experimented with anal beads, it opens up to potential to move on to some other toys. There are plenty of toys to spice up your anal play, from dildo’s to butt plugs – so there’s something for everyone!
