Mummification – A Beginners Guide

Mummification is not just a source of folklore and horror movies. Within a BDSM and bondage context, mummification is a specialised form of bondage in which an individual is completely immobilised. They can be wrapped in a variety of materials, from cling film to body bags to the more traditional bandages. Some enjoy being left for a period of time in a state of sensory deprivation, while others enjoy being sensually stimulated in their state of bondage – it really depends on the preferences of the individual.

Is It ‘Normal’?

Most people want to know, and be reassured, that they fall within the sexually ‘normal’ spectrum, and that whatever is going through their mind when they’re fantasising is acceptable. In all honesty, there really is no normal when it comes to sex; we are all different in our sexual desires and kinks. If there’s mutual consent, plenty of communication, and you are both safe, it really doesn’t matter what gets you going.

Nevertheless, mummification is becoming an increasingly common practice within the BDSM community. This kink is considered closely linked to bondage as well as other fetishes such as rubber, body bags, and latex. Mummification is usually enjoyed by those who been part of the BDSM community for some time, and are looking to explore more advanced forms of bondage or total enclosure. It is also a way for couples to strengthen their bonds of trust, especially if the sub is left for a period of time. Of course, due to the nature of this fetish, it requires 100% consent from both participants.

Communication Is Key

Although it provides immobility and the feeling of submission, like other bondage techniques, there are added physical and emotional elements that are hard to duplicate any other way, such as sensory deprivation and total helplessness. BDSM relationships require a high level of trust, communication and respect – even more so with mummification. First things first, you need to make sure what you’re doing is safe, healthy and consensual. Ask plenty of questions and ensure you and your partner are on the same wavelength.

BDSM sessions are more theatrical than real, and so scenes should be planned in advance. For those encased, they will be unable to say a safeword or use an obvious signal when they’re in distress. How will they communicate? Through blinking? Through tongue movement (if the mouth is uncovered)? Whatever you decide, the signal immediately stops the scene. Any dom who fails to honour the pre-agreed signal violates the sub’s trust and destroys the relationship.

Health and Safety

Mummification can cause the encased individual to experience trouble breathing, severe dehydration, restricted blood circulation, and sudden panic. Therefore, the dom needs to be extremely vigilant, paying close attention to their partner at all times. Keep scissors close by, so that the mummification material can be cut through easily and quickly if needed. After the unwrapping process, body temperatures are likely to decrease rapidly. So, ensure that you unwrap your partner in a warm environment or have blankets to hand.

What Type of Wrapping Should Be Used?

This is a personal preference, but there are many materials that can be employed. Some you can find in your home, while others are sold specifically for mummification and can be found online. Adhesive tapes and wraps are popular for mummification, but can also be used in general bondage. You’ll want to have plenty of wrap available, because it takes more than you think. Reusable Bondage Tape (€10.94, kinky.ie) is a sexy and cost efficient wrapping material. It is easy to use and adheres to itself but not your skin or hair, like other tapes. Start by covering the torso first, then work on the arms, and finally the legs. This system helps the dom, as the soon-to-be mummy can turn in circles to help with the process.

Avoid wrapping the head on the first few attempts, so that you can practice your technique and find positions and materials that work for you both. Blindfolding your partner with a Padded Blindfold (€5.75, kinky.ie) or a bondage hood, such as the Fetish Fantasy Spandex Open Mouth Hood (€28.78, kinky.ie), will work as a sufficient substitute until you are both ready. If you want to wrap the head, you will need to make sure there is a system put in place that will facilitate breathing. Couples have been known to try a straw in the mouth – this is a small piece of tubing that could easily fall out. Instead, opt for sturdy rubber breathing tube at least 1” wide that will extend well beyond the layers of wrapping.

How long should you leave your partner mummified? This can be a very intense experience – beginners should be mummified for no longer than 15 minutes. Some experienced participants enjoy being left for hours – this requires full-time supervision. Again, this is something that should be discussed both before and after the session.
