A Look At Lubricants

Let’s face it; sex isn’t always as kinky or romantic as it’s portrayed in the movies. It can be uncoordinated, messy and sometimes a little uncomfortable. Lubricant is the quickest and easiest way to prevent any dryness, chafing or uncomfortable friction during sex. It can also help prolong your love-making sessions, and make your own masturbation more enjoyable. When it comes to choosing a lubricant, the variety of products is endless. A little confused? Let us help you!

Here’s the lowdown on different types of lube, things to be mindful of when choosing the right lube for you.

Water-based Lube

For starters, virtually all lubes on the market today fall into one of three categories — water, silicone, or oil-based. Each of these has their advantages and disadvantages, nevertheless water-based lubes are by far the most popular.

As the name suggests, these lubes are water-based. They tend to be smooth and slick, and lack the sticky and messy-ness that silicone and oil-based lubes are known to be. As they’re water-soluble, skin and mucous membranes will absorb them. This is great for those who like a quick and easy clean up after sex: all you need is a bit of warm water, and some soap, and the lube will easily wash off the skin.

However, its solubility is also its biggest disadvantage. Because of how quickly it can be absorbed by the skin, you might have to periodically re-apply it, depending on how long you’re going for. This can be a bit of a mood killer; stopping in the middle of a heated session to re-apply is not ideal.

Water-based lubes are condom-compatible and can be used with most toys, as opposed to oil-based lubes that corrode latex. One thing to watch out for, however, is that many water-based lubes contain glycerine – which is known to promote infections in women. So if you do decide to use a water-based lube, a post-sex clean-up is mandatory.

Silicone-based Lube

Silicone-based lubes are a bit like marmite – you’ll either love it or hate it! Those who don’t like silicone-based lubes say that using them is like having motor oil slathered on your parts, while others swear by it.

They tend to be a little greasier and thinner in texture. Strangely that’s their main advantage: compared with water-based lubes, silicone-based lubes take ages to dry out. So there’ll be no need to stop mid-session to reapply! What’s more; they’re waterproof and can be used on latex condoms and dams. However, there’s one very important rule regarding silicone-based lubes; do not use them on toys that are made from silicone or Cyberskin. The only things that silicone bonds with, is silicone – and I guarantee you that the last thing you or your partner wants is a chemical reaction occurring inside you/her/him.

The main disadvantage of silicone-based lubes is that they can create a bit of a mess and aren’t as easy to clean-up as water-based lubes. On the plus side, you can suggest a post-sex shower with your partner…

Oil-based Lube

Oil-based lubes are generally not as popular as the other two. Firstly, they tend to corrode latex, so you can’t use them with latex condoms (of course, there are non-latex options available, but expect to pay a little more). Secondly, they’re usually made with ingredients that are bad for vaginal health; they tend to dry them out and can lead to some nasty infections. Because of this, I recommend that they are only used for male solo ventures. And finally, they’re typically slimy and way messier than the others.

Despite these disadvantages, some swear by it. As with most things, it’s all a process of trial and error – until you try it, you won’t know!

Flavoured

Like to use your hands and your mouth at the same time? Opt for a flavoured lube and make that 69 tastier than ever. There are the variety of flavours available is endless, so you are bound to find something that you like! You can go for the traditional strawberry or cherry, or try something a little different like mint-choc-chip or pina colada. The great thing about flavoured lubes is that it allows you and your partner to experiment in the bedroom – injecting a little fun and excitement into your sex life.
